Much how some people in the UK who had a strong regional accent originally later adopted a more RP or somewhat posh Southeast England accent if they moved to that kind of region.īut if I am quite depressed, the monotone sometimes returns. I am unsure if I am quite an outlier in being able to truly absorb what was first a mask, but I always thought the best thing was to find what was considered a normal difference in speech related to personality, figure out what that was and then emulate it until it became second nature. I am laid-back by nature, and speak generally like how I write, but I listened to the intonation calm but NT people can have and found it much easier to at first imitate then just become habit, with occasional bursts of a more extroverted style while excited or sharing jokes. Used to have a monotone voice in my very early teens, but in my constantly trying to improve my social skills I found the right voice for me.
